No More CERT At University of Washington

Story broken by The Stranger.

According to UW Spokesman Norm Arkans, CERT, the loss of federal funding—along with CERT’s director—led to the termination of the program. “The grant expired and we don’t have the resources to pick up the funding,” Arkans says. “It’s a great thing to have if you’ve got the funding for it. It has people out who can be of assistance on the ground when you have emergencies.”

UW is the size of a small city and it seems obvious that their safety services ought to include organization of CERT.

However,CERT is a volunteer program and in most places runs on civic energy. There are plenty of trained CERT Volunteers at UW - who now need to organize themselves, their activities, and their continuing training.

As a UW parent, of course I am concerned and will follow up - I was very disappointed that in a 30minute safety presentation to parents at orientation, nothing was mentioned about earthquake safety. So... I'll get cracking in the parent network.

Hope some of you will too! How about CERT at WWU?! Please tell us more about the home front...
